Baby Blue Foundation Mourns the Death of A.C. Newborn Found in Trash Can

8211; On July 4th the third newborn in as many years lost his life because of abandonment or murder in one of New Jersey's8217;s shore communities.
This time the newborn's8217;s tragic death happened in Atlantic City. The police were called to investigate some bloody articles found in an alleyway near Texas Avenue. Upon their arrival, the officer discovered the body of a baby boy in a garbage can.

On January 17, 2004, Ventnor resident Bill Ferrier while walking on the beach found himself in a similar circumstance. Ferrier came across a bag tumbling in the surf. Curious, he pulled the sack from the frigid waters near Suffolk Avenue. When he opened the bag he found the body of a newborn baby girl. Ferrier named her Blue. This was the start of the Baby Blue Foundation.

The purpose of the Foundation is to prevent future occurrences of newborn death (neonatacide); honor the short life of Baby Blue and provide burial services to newborns abandoned or murdered with in the first 24-hours of life.

This latest discover, once again affirms the need for the Baby Blue Foundation. Additionally, it is evidence that programs such as the Safe Haven program are not working. This may be due to a shortage funds and publicity, hence a lack of awareness.

Forty-eight states offer Safe Haven programs, yet neonatacide continues to occur in every state in the nation. Statistics on its frequency likely do not even touch the actual number of incidences.

A representative from the Baby Blue Foundation has already been in touch with the Atlantic County Medical Examiner's8217;s Office, Atlantic City Police and other officials. In the event the mother or family is unwilling to accept responsibility for the baby's8217;s burial, the Foundation will step up and accept that obligation as they did for Baby Blue in 2004.

Donations can be made to the Baby Blue Foundation at P.O. Box 2408, Ventnor, NJ 08406 or online at www.babybluefoundation.org.
