Broward County Trial Lawyers Association Will Roll The Dice To Help Fight Leukemia Lymphoma
April 27, 2005 -- The Broward County Trial Lawyers Association (BCTLA) will host "Casino Night" on Saturday, May 14 from 7-11PM at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, 3555 S. Ocean Drive, Hollywood. The Association will donate half of the net proceeds from the event to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), to help in the fight against these dreadful diseases. The night will feature Black Jack, Craps, Texas Hold 'Em, Roulette, raffles and great prizes. The event is open to the public, and tickets are $75. As part of the ticket price, each guest will receive $40 in casino "fun money" to enjoy as they choose.
Friendship Creates Link Between BCTLA, LLS
When she worked at the law firm of Lytal, Reiter, Clark, Fountain & Williams in West Palm Beach, BCTLA executive director Cindy Wilkinson became close friends with co-worker Tammy Deacy, a longtime employee of the firm. Upon learning that Mrs. Deacy had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Wilkinson said, "we decided right away that half of the proceeds from our event would go to LLS to help find a cure for this disease. I approached the board with the idea, and they were very supportive."
Lymphomas are cancers of the lymphatic system - the body's blood-filtering tissues that help fight infection and disease. Like other cancers, lymphomas occur when cells divide too much and too fast. Growth control is lost, and the lymphatic cells may overcrowd, invade, and destroy lymphoid tissues and metastasize (spread) to other organs. This year, more than 50,000 people will be diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"I can't thank the Broward County Trial Lawyers Association enough for this wonderful gesture," said Mrs. Deacy. "I know there are a thousand things they could choose to sponsor, and I'm honored that they chose something that is so close to my heart." Deacy said that after she got over the initial shock of being diagnosed a year ago, she found "great comfort in the people I met through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Everyone is so positive and upbeat, which is what it takes to get through something like this, and I'm very grateful to have found such a wonderful support group."
Sponsors for the BCTLA Casino Night include: Mellon Bank; Centers for Neurology; Choice Medical Group; CopyScan; Diagnostic Professionals; Grossman and Roth; Klein Bury Reif Applebaum - U.S. Legal Support; Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock Liberman & McKee; Legal Expert Connections, Inc.; Lytal, Reiter, Clark, Fountain & Williams, LLP; Mediation Partners; RecordShred; Ringler Associates; Robson Forensics; Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley; and Windsor Imaging.
Co-chairs for Casino Night are Bradley Winston and Diana Santa Maria, both members of the BCLA board of directors. Also serving on the committee are board members Alexander Clark, Roseann Flynn, Julie Hager and Steven Jaffe.
