More than 4000 Worth of Equipment Stolen from a Home Building Site for Iraq War Veteran in Middleboro MA
May 4, 2005 -- John Gonsalves, founder of Homes for Our Troops said the theft of a generator, compressor and hammer drill was reported to the Middleboro police Friday morning. The equipment was being stored in a container at the building site. He is asking that the equipment be returned.
"It's the wrong thing to do anyway, but hopefully if someone hears what that project was all about, maybe they'll find it in their heart to return the equipment, "Gonsalves said.
Because someone felt that taking a few thousand dollars worth of equipment was more important to them than what an injured soldier and his family might need put the building of this specially adapted home for Sgt. Damon and his family in jeopardy.
The entire project could have been brought to a standstill.
Homes For Our Troops, Inc. is building its first house for Sgt. Damon. The three-bedroom ranch home, which will be specially equipped to meet Damon's needs, is the first the group is building, mostly with donations from all over the United states and around the globe.
Work crews from the New England Regional Council of Carpenters have been using the equipment to provide power to the site until the electric system can be installed. "We rented what we needed for today and tomorrow because the job would have been shut down otherwise, "Mr. Gonsalves said Friday night. "If somebody wants to return the items taken, there will be no questions asked."
Sgt. Damon, who was at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. has returned home for good, Gonsalves said, "and it has been nice having Damon down at the site to see the progress of his future home".
Gonsalves plans to post a sign at the property notifying whoever stole the equipment they have stolen it from a project that is being built for a wounded veteran.
Anyone with information regarding the theft is asked to call 508-823-3300. Information can also be left at
