Social Services Network Celebrates South Asian Day in York Region

May 12, 2005 -- Social Services Network (SSN) of York Region, a "baby agency" of the local South Asian community is celebrating South Asian Day on Saturday May 14, 2005 at the Markham Museum from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Markham Museum is located at
9350 Hwy 48 in Markham.

During May, the South Asian community will be the focus of many special events and celebrations showcasing their artwork, dance and music. "Our diversity is an important part of what makes Ontario work," said Premier McGuinty. "Our people speak every language, relate to every culture and understand every market. Ontario's South Asian communities provide the entire province with a tremendous economic, social and cultural advantage."

Don Cousens - Mayor of Markham, Frank DelZotto - Chair, United Way of York Region, Dr. Usha George, Ph.D., Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, Armand Le Barge, Chief of Police, York Region and various other politicans and dignitaries are expected to attend and celebrate with a preview of South Asian culture, exhibition and foods.

SSN was formed as a direct result of a study commissioned by the United Way of York Region (UWYR). This study, the "Leading Ethnoracial Access Dialogue (LEAD) Project" concluded that a need existed for a formal, not-for-project infrastructure dedicated to delivering human/social services to the South Asian community in York Region.
