One National Gay Lesbian Archives To Launch LGBT History WebsiteJune 16 Reception Will Celebrate Key Individuals and Moments in Gay History

May 16, 2005 -- At an evening reception on June 16, ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives will launch its web-based LGBT History Timeline at an event called "Magnificent Moments - Icons and Milestones in LGBT History." The celebration, to be held at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's Village at Ed Gould Plaza from 7 to 9 p.m., will be free and open to the public.

The LGBT History Timeline is a web-based research tool that will make lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) history accessible in a new and innovative way to students, academics, and others seeking online access to a wealth of information about the LGBT community and the leaders and events that have defined our community's movement for equality and justice.

"This exciting project will serve as a tremendous resource to the LGBT community and beyond," said Dr. Joseph Hawkins, board president of ONE Archives and lecturer in the Anthropology Department at the University of Southern California (USC). "As a professor, I became keenly aware that many of my students did not know about some of the key figures in our community's history-as recent as Harvey Milk or Anita Bryant. In developing the LGBT History Timeline, the ONE Archives wanted to come up with a way to make our community's history more broadly accessible."

Documenting more than 65 years of grassroots history, the LGBT History Timeline project was generously funded by a grant from UCLA in LA's Center for Community Partnerships.

"We are thrilled with what we have been able to put together and we can't wait to launch the new website," said Dr. Ronni Sanlo, director of UCLA's LGBT Campus Resource Center, "It seems appropriate to celebrate the launch of this website in Southern California since our region is, in so many ways, is the birthplace of the LGBT civil rights movement in this country. From the breakthroughs of the Mattachine Society in 1951, to the first National Lesbian Conference held at UCLA in 1973, to the present battle over gay and lesbian marriage rights, the LGBT History Timeline will enable us to make available that rich history and so much more in a broad and comprehensive way."

The "Magnificent Moments - Icons and Milestones in LGBT History" reception will celebrate and commemorate the official launch of the LGBT History Timeline. It is free event and is open to the public. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Several levels of sponsorship are available ranging from $100 to $5,000. All contributions will provide valuable and needed support to ONE Archives as it works to preserve our community's past and ultimately ensure our future.

"Magnificent Moments - Icons and Milestones in LGBT History" will be held on June 16, 7 p.m. at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's Village at Ed Gould Plaza, 1125 N. McCadden Place located one block east of Highland, just north of Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood.
