Media Advisory US Rep Peter King Long Island NY to Introduce Major Federal Stem Cell Research Legislation in Congress



May 20, 2005 -- US Representative Peter King (3rd District, New York), will be introducing a stem cell research bill in Congress on Monday evening and will be making his announcement at a fundraiser for the Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury on Long Island that morning. Stem cell research, which has been the subject of both hope and controversy, is seen as potentially providing a major breakthrough in the fight to cure spinal cord injury as well as other afflictions. While funding has been provided by some states, this announcement is historic, since federal legislation has yet to be passed due to the sensitivity surrounding the subject.

What: News Conference at which US Congressman Peter King will announce the introduction of federal legislation to direct NIH to establish and fund "Centers of Excellence" to engage in adult stem cell research.

The Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury Inc (www.testaverdefund.org) is a 501C3 organization established in 2003 as a means of raising funds for and awareness of spinal cord injury (SCI) and the need for more research. In 2004 the group expanded its efforts with the creation of the Long Island Spinal Cord Resource Center which is involved in education programs for junior and senior high school students. The Center also provides community outreach for families afflicted with spinal cord injury.
