Sweet 16 Party Will Help Save Animals Lives
June 16, 2005 -- The annual bash, the shelter's biggest fundraiser of the year, will include both silent and live auctions with special celebrity auctioneers Jessica Aguirre, anchor of ABC TV Channel 7 News, and Deirdre Kennedy, announcer/producer of the KUSF radio program "Animals Aloud" and former NPR reporter. Prizes will include airline tickets, B&B stays, restaurant and bodywork gift certificates, golf supplies, dog-walking and training services, pet photo sessions, Trader Joe's gift baskets, San Francisco Opera tickets, a Zap Zappy electric scooter, and art works, from ceramics to museum-quality photos by Thea Schrack, Susan Friedman and others.
Proceeds from the party will primarily support the life-saving work of ACC's rescue partners, small nonprofits whose volunteers rescue those animals at ACC who are at risk of euthanasia for medical or behavioral reasons. The rescue groups get the animals the veterinary and training services that ACC cannot afford, thus saving those animals' lives, and care for them until they are adopted. The benefit's proceeds will also help sustain ACC's popular public services, such as free microchipping clinics and the online lost pet reunion service, PetHarbor.com.
The El Rio is located at 3158 Mission Street, between Cesar Chavez and Valencia, four blocks south of the 24th Street BART station and on numerous Muni routes. Self-parking for $5 is available in a lot across the street from the El Rio next to a Blockbuster Video store.
The event, billed as ACC's "Sweet 16" Party, will also feature vegetarian pizzas and vegan hors d'oeuvres, pies from Marie Callender, a live DJ (Robbie Socks) and El Rio's full no-host bar. Admission is $25.
Reservations are available by credit card online by logging on to Paypal.com and sending payment to e-mail protected from spam bots. Or mail checks to the party's producer, the nonproft Friends of San Francisco Animal Care and Control, at FSFACC, P.O. Box 2443, San Francisco, CA 94126-2443. Or pay by check or cash at the door. Winning auction bidders will be able to pay by check only.
ACC, San Francisco's open-door municipal animal shelter, was founded in 1989. It provides humane welfare for all of San Francisco's animals, wild and domestic, and animal-related public health and education services, from dog licensing to classroom education by ACC's "Animal Cops." ACC is one of the few Bay Area shelters offering small animals, such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, chickens, parakeets, finches and iguanas, for adoption, in addition to dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. The Friends of San Francisco Animal Care and Control, founded in 2000, is ACC's primary nonprofit independent development organization. For more information about ACC, call (415) 554-6364.
