January 3, 2006 -- U.C.C. has started the New Year with a New Executive Director. United Cambodian Community, Inc. was started in 1978 to aid refugees of the genocide in the Royal Kingdom of Cambodia.
California, Long Beach specifically, has the largest concentration of Cambodians, approximately 40,000, living outside of their country.
United Cambodian Community realized that the refugees were coming from a culture far different than the one they were entering. Many Cambodian refugees came from accommodations that did not have electricity, running water, sit down toilets, refrigerators, stoves, cars, television, public transportation, service agencies.
The adjustment to this major change in living conditions required and still requires assistance.
Executive Director, James Dok, resigned on December 16, 2005. Pastor Dok expressed a wish to spend more time with his family. On December 22, 2005, Dianne Theil McNinch was appointed as his successor, she is the first woman to head this agency.
Dianne is well known in the community service sector. She has provided volunteer non profit board service in Wyoming, Colorado, California for over 30 years. Ms. McNinch has a close relationship with the Royal Kingdom of Cambodia, based upon her humantarian work in that country since 1998. She feels that her position as Vice President of the Governing Board of Trustees of Long Beach Community College District will help increase awareness of educational opportunities for the Long Beach Cambodian population.
Ms. McNinch stated, "I am aware of the challenges that face me in taking the helm of U.C.C. I am depending upon the support of the entire Long Beach community to be successful in continuing to serve the needs of the Cambodian population of our great city."
