Cell Phone Donations To Help Local Outpatient Center For Children

January 23, 2005 -- The next time you look at that old cell phone gathering dust at home, keep The Gregory Kistler Treatment Center For Children in mind - they'd like to take it off your hands.

American Cellular Donation Organization (ACDO), a nonprofit organization based in Warren, Michigan, announced today that The Kistler Center (3304 South M Street, Fort Smith) has launched a used cell phone collection campaign. During the campaign, which will be ongoing, used, idle cell phones will be asked for, thus freeing them from closets, desks and dressers and enabling them to be exchanged for charitable cash. No out-of-pocket cash donation is needed -- just a willingness to donate a used cell phone.

Nonworking cell phones that are collected will be recycled according to all EPA guidelines so they don't end up in landfills, where their toxins could harm the environment.

The mission of the Kistler Center is to provide an opportunity for all children to lead full, productive lives with the assistance of occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language therapy. It is the only outpatient center specializing in the treatment of children in the Arkansas & Oklahoma region.

"We are absolutely honored and pleased to assist the Kistler Center in this fundraising and recycling effort" ACDO founder and CEO Vincent Serio said today. "Throughout their region, the Center is known as the premier pediatric facility of its kind," Mr. Serio added.

Mr. Serio said there are currently over 500 million idle cell phones in the United States and, he said, that number increases by about 80 million each year as users strive to keep up with the latest technology, such as camera phones and other gizmos.

Kathie Taylor, Development Coordinator for the Kistler Center, said, "This is such a simple thing to do, because people will be able to participate and contribute very conveniently, yet so many others will benefit. We are eager to get started."

ACDO turns the donated cell phones into cash thru their sale to third world countries, small retailers, and others who need mobile communication but would not otherwise be able to afford it.

People interested in donating their used cell phones to the Kistler Center are urged to call (479) 785-4677. Persons who don't care to specify which organization receives their donation can visit www.cellulardonation.org/zip.asp and input their zip code for the dropbox location nearest to them.
