Hospitalers Committee Awards Grant to Vista Maria Funds to Provide...

The Hospitaler'ss Committee of Detroit Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar, a local Masonic organization, has awarded a $5000 grant to Vista Maria, a private not-for-profit child welfare agency and community resource for disadvantaged children and their families, to fund recreation and art therapy programs.

The Hospitaler'ss Committee has a long history of supporting organizations that benefit children and those needing special assistance, said Gilbert A. Rice, Hospitaler'ss Committee President. What Vista Maria does for the disadvantaged youth of Metro Detroit is outstanding, and we are proud to support their efforts. It is through the generous donations of our Masonic brothers that we are able to establish a private foundation for this kind of activity.

Vista Maria'ss Recreation Therapy Department is a goal-orientated program of developmental and therapeutic services designed to increase a child'ss functioning in self-care, physical and emotional health, socialization, communication, and recreation and leisure education.Recreational therapy services also offered by Vista Maria helps children develop and improve physical, cognitive, emotional, and social abilities as they relate to functional independence.

The Hospitaler'ss Committee grant will fund art and recreational therapy activities such as torn paper collage, mask making/ self-portraits, and group dance activities (often led and demonstrated peer to peer), and team sports/games respectively.

With the generous support of the Hospitaler'ss Committee grant, more than 1,000 vulnerable children in care this year at Vista Maria can express through therapy what they are often unable to say in words through drawings and paintings. This form of expression helps them heal and ensures their complete recovery, says Vista Maria President and CEO Cameron Hosner.

Celebrating its 125th Anniversary, Vista Maria'ss goal is to end the multi-generational patterns of abuse, neglect, and poverty that face thousands of disadvantaged children, young adults and families in Southeast Michigan. Additional information can be found at www.vistamaria.org.

The Hospitaler'ss Committee is based in the Detroit Masonic Temple. The group manages a private 501(c)(3) foundation that makes contributions to qualified organizations in support of charitable, educational and religious activities throughout southeast Michigan.
