May 30, 2006 -- All who come out will be able to participate in live on-air demonstrations, communications and emergency preparedness activities as guests of the York Region Amateur Radio Club (YRARC) as they gear up to have fun at the Amateur Radio Field Day Weekend, June 24-25, 2006 at the Sutton Fair Grounds.

During Field Day, local enthusiasts will put on demonstrations and take part in activities to raise awareness about Amateur Radio on the 100th anniversary year of voice communication. The week culminates with the annual preparedness exercise called Field Day, June 24th and 25th.

YRARC operator's8217;s set up at the Sutton Fair Grounds to get on the air using generator power. Field Day was designed to test operators's abilities to set up and operate portable stations under emergency conditions such as the loss of electricity. We want the community to know that in the event of an emergency, we will be ready to assist in any way we can,'s8221; says Judy Yanocko, club member and participant. While people often think that cell phones or other communications technologies have replaced ham radio, we can still provide an important communications service that others can'st, like during the black-out in /03 or the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Field Day is a serious test of skill, but it is also a contest for fun and the largest on-air operating event each year. During the weekend, radio operators try to contact as many other Field Day stations as possible. More than 30,000 Amateur Radio operators across the country, the US and even the International Space Station (ISS) participated in last year'ss event.

The YRARC will hold Field Day at the Sutton Fair Grounds, Market St., Sutton, and will set-up starting at 9:00 AM June 24, 2006 with the best photo opportunity during the contest running 2:00 PM June 24, 2006 until 2:00 PM June 25, 2006 round the clock. We hope that anyone who is interested in seeing what Amateur Radio is all about will come out for Field Day, says Judy.

Today there are more than 2.5 million hams worldwide including astronauts aboard the ISS.
