Growing Sound is a social venture of Children, Inc., a thirty year old non-profit based in Covington, Kentucky. David Kisor is currently touring the South African township of Mamelodi. Kisor was featured on National Youth Day in an effort to bring hope to the area through his positive children'ss music (http://shop.childreninc.org). Growing Sound produces music based on recent research that is designed to build social and emotional skills in young children. Growing Sound was approached by Bridge to Cross to participate in the National Youth Day and to share the positive messages in Kisor'ss music. Mamelodi is a large township of over 1 million people outside of Pretoria in South Africa. Leading up to the trip Kisor worked with Willis Music to purchase penny whistles and harmonicas that he will be giving to the children of Mamelodi in order to share the joy of making music.
In addition to the Youth Day concert, Kisor will visit schools, make music with children, provide music lessons and explore ways in which Growing Sound and its resilience curriculum could
benefit the children of Mamelodi and other South African townships. The risk factors are very real for Mamelodi'ss children with HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty taking their toll on the
community. These make the Songs of Resilience'ss internal protective factors of attachment, initiative and self-control very important to the children of Mamelodi in coping with these
serious stressors. The joy of music is a wonderful antidote to poverty and illness. Growing Sound is grateful to have the opportunity to bring our developmental music (http://shop.childreninc.org/songs-for-ages-c-17.html) to the children of Mamelodi.
Growing Sound provides high quality research based teaching tools to parents and teachers. These musical tools are based in recent research in Positive Psychology and help to develop
social emotional skills like attachment, initiative and self control stated Growing Sound director Tom Lottman.
Kisor will be posting regular updates to his video blog located at http://shop.childreninc.org for visitors to follow on his journey abroad. Upon
his return Kisor will also be sharing what he learned about South Africa with the children he works with every day in Children, Inc. child development centers. Visit http://shop.childreninc.org for more information on David and his Songs of Resilience.
Growing Sound
Growing Sound is an on-going celebration of positive growth through songs, books and videos. Children have fun singing while parents help their children develop skills that make them
ready for school and ready for life. Childhood educators and researchers participate and observe as the latest findings in child development and brain research are practiced in school and
at home. Growing Sound enhances every child'ss natural growth and development. The materials stimulate growth in all areas of the child'ss life; including social-emotional skills,
learning skills, and literacy.
Growing Sound songs, books and videos are available in traditional formats as well as electronic down-loads, making them easy to use at home, in the car and at school. The Growing Sound
songs can be purchased and downloaded immediately from http://shop.childreninc.org. Or, if you prefer, a CD will be mailed to you. Growing Sound
is a social enterprise that supports the mission and vision of Children, Inc.
