A local ministry partnership is using sewing machines, refrigerators, and trucks to wage war against poverty and hopelessness. Like David going into battle against Goliath with just a few rocks, the Honduran Holiness Church and World Gospel Mission are using everyday items at the Choluteca Vocational School to combat the spiritual and social giant of poverty.

This year the school is building a new weapon--the Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV). Designed to provide affordable transportation in underdeveloped countries, the BUV is fabricated from a chassis kit plus locally available materials. With many advantages over a larger pickup truck--including costing just $4,000 and low maintenance costs--BUVs are already in use in Honduras as ambulances, school buses, farm equipment, and general transport for small businesses.

For students at the Choluteca Vocational School, building four BUVs in 2009 will mean hands-on experience plus $16,000 of income coming directly to the school so it can provide life and trade skills for more Hondurans.

Today, two-thirds of the Honduran people live below the poverty level, and 65 percent of Hondurans do not have educational opportunities beyond the sixth grade. Choluteca Vocational School offers 120 at-risk youth two-year degrees in commercial sewing, refrigeration, or auto mechanics. The school emphasizes biblical-based training that develops entrepreneurship as well as technical expertise.
