The Tri-City Family Housing Annual Meeting took place on Sept. 28th at the Four Points Sheraton in Revere, MA. Members of the general public joined Tri-City's Board of Directors and staff
to reflect on the agency's 19-year history and to gear up for an ambitious future.
At this annual event, the Board of Directors voted to change the name of the nonprofit agency from Tri-City Family Housing, Inc. to Housing Families Inc. Under its new name, Housing
Families Inc. will continue to provide shelter, housing and supportive services to homeless and low-income families in Greater Boston, as it has since 1986. The re-branding initiative
marks a new chapter in Tri-City's efforts to be a force for change in the northern communities of Greater Boston.
Judy Perlman, CEO of Housing Families Inc., said, "The new name will eliminate some of the confusion Tri-City Family Housing has faced over the years due to the number of organizations
which have 'Tri-City' as part of their name, while reinforcing that the organization's efforts extend to more than three cities and towns. The biggest reason to make this change now, is
to reaffirm our deep commitment to developing meaningful housing solutions for families in Greater Boston, especially now that metropolitan Boston was identified as the highest-cost area
in the U.S. This underscores the need for swift action and leadership. 'Housing Families' sums up our primary reason for existing: to return families to housing of their own."
Paul J. Donato, State Representative from the Thirty-fifth Middlesex District, gave the keynote address and presented the "Ann L. Slattery Award for Extraordinary Contributions," awarded
each year to a community leader. This year's honoree was Carolyn E. Lightburn, outgoing Clerk of the Housing Families Inc. Board of Directors and Director, Office of Human Services for
the City of Everett.
"Carolyn's quiet leadership in the area of emergency funds and services to low-income families and elderly residents of Everett and surrounding cities and towns made her a perfect choice
for this annual honor," said Judy Perlman.
Future initiatives for Housing Families outlined by Board President, David M. Kilpatrick, include additional affordable real estate development; aggressive fundraising to support current
and future programs for homeless families; and continuing attention to high-quality services.
Housing Families Inc. (formerly known as Tri-City Family Housing, Inc.) was founded in 1986 by community members concerned about the growing crisis of homelessness among families in the
cities of Everett, Malden, and Medford. Since then Housing Families Inc. has grown into one of the largest providers of family shelter in Massachusetts. Over 1,300 families have been
helped since we first opened our doors. The agency's central mission is to help families build the skills and understanding they need to make a successful transition into their own home,
and to prevent any recurrence of homelessness. For more information, please visit www.housingfamilies.org.
