Statement of Need
Ethics is an issue that dominates today's headlines. Ethics is a core aspect of the definition of a profession, and the oldest profession to have developed a consciousness of ethics is medicine. It is from the trunk of medicine and its ethics that all mental health professions have sprouted. In this ethics-focused continuing education activity, Dr. Mark Komrad reviews the history of medical ethics and explains basic concepts used in formal ethical reason and some of the methods whereby those concepts can be applied to the rigorous thinking-through of an ethical dilemma. Specific ethical codes developed for various professions are examined. Finally, specific ethical issues and dilemmas pertaining to the practice of mental health are reviewed.
