Inova Celebrates Opening of the Edelman Nursing Career Development...

January 13, 2005 -- The Inova Institute for Nursing Excellence is pleased to announce the grand opening of the Edelman Nursing Career Development Center. The only one of its kind in the Washington metropolitan area, the center will offer career planning, development and educational opportunities to Inova's 4,000 nurses.

The center is named for Jean and Ric Edelman who donated $250,000 to establish a nursing career development center at Inova Health System. Ric Edelman is a nationally recognized financial advisor, author and radio talk-show host. The Edelmans wanted to provide an opportunity to help nurses plan for their financial futures and assist them in their career planning, development and growth.



"Nurses are on the front lines of patient care. We all know that they are too often over-worked and under-appreciated. And they work in a highly technical field where continuing education is mandatory. So helping them grow in their profession is the least we can do to say 'thank you'," says Ric Edelman.



The Edelmans have been generous supporters of nursing at Inova by providing funds for nursing scholarships, learning lab equipment and even offering financial seminars for nurses.



Karen Drenkard, vice president and chief nurse executive, Inova Health System, says the center will be another valuable resource for Inova's nurses and will help attract new nurses to Inova.



"The Edelmans have made a wonderful contribution to our current nursing staff and our future nurses. The resources available will enable nurses to explore educational and training opportunities, improve their skills, advance their careers and plan for their future," she says.



Inova nurses will be able to use a Web-based career assessment tool to determine career advancement strategies at the center. Career center consultants will be available to meet with nurses to discuss career goals and academic planning for advanced degrees in nursing. The nurses will also be able to participate in an online educational in-service series, learn about how to earn certification for nursing specialties, enroll in a mentor program and learn more about promotion on the nursing clinical ladder. Nurses will have access to nurse experts from numerous specialty areas. Information about scholarship opportunities is also available through the center.
