The National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service, Inc. (NAPNES) announced today the release of the free toolbar software for nurses. The free software download adds a
new toolbar to the users's8217; Internet web browser. The software gives nurses instant access to dozens of tools and links to help make surfing nursing on the Internet faster, easier and
more efficient. The toolbar can be downloaded free from NAPNES website at www.napnes.org.
The toolbar allows users to block pop-up advertising, has a built-in search capability that a present can be used to search a medical dictionary, encyclopedia, medications, NIH, and a
major search engine. This helps save time because the user can begin the search from any website they are already visiting. Thus eliminating the need to first navigate to one of these
sites and then using the site's8217;s search engine.
The toolbar also provides direct, one click links to dozens of free Internet resources. These resources include clinical calculators, links to NIH, CDC, state boards of nursing, links for
nursing educators, clinicians, patient education, nursing care plans, and student aides.
's8220;At present we have links to more than three dozen excellent Internet resources for nurses's8221; said Mattie Marshall, LPN and president of NAPNES.
's8220;These links will be expanding and we will be accepting suggestions from our membership and users for additional resources's8221;, said Marshall. NAPNES technical department has
announced that all upgrades to the software will also be free and automatic. When a user access the Internet, the software will automatically check for updates every 20 minutes and
download those changes in the background.
's8220;While the toolbar is designed primarily for Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses, Practical Nursing Educators and Practical Nursing Students, it is also a very useful tool for any
level of nurse including Registered Nurses's8221; said Pat Mahan, Executive Director of NAPNES. 's8220;Most of the resources linked to the toolbar are applicable to nurses in a variety of
clinical setting and regardless of educational preparation's8221; said Mahan.
One of the most important parts of the toolbar is its NursingAlert feature. The NursingAlert is a ticker tape type display that appears at the end of the toolbar. Most of the time, it
will just display explain what it is, but in the event that a large number of nurses need to be alerted to a particular issue, the NursingAlert will turn red and contain an overview of
the alert and a link where the user can get additional information. 's8220;Events of the last several years have made it clear that organizations like ours need to have a variety of
communication modalities that allow us to mobilize our membership and other professionals on a moments notice, and this tool gives us an avenue to bring urgent information to our users
within minutes's8221; said Mahan.
Toolbars are a part of most PC based computer software. Toolbars appear near the top of a software's8217;s screen and provide shortcuts to tools provided by the software. NAPNES toolbar
functions in the same way. The program itself is a very small file and downloads and installs in just a couple of minutes even with a dial-up Internet connection. Once installed, the
software adds a toolbar to the Internet browser and is available each time the user opens the web browser and connects to the Internet.
