Sports and Adventure Tourism for Samar Leyte
The Samar - Leyte region was recently chosen to the Philippines top Sports and Adventure destination of the country in the occasion of the Department of Tourism'ss on going WOW Philippines festival being held in Intramuros, Manila.
According to Eastern Visayas DOT Director Karen Tiopes, the pristine and virginal condition of EVs natural environment made the DOT National Office decide to promote Samar and Leyte as primary Adventure destinations both for Domestic and Inbound Tourism.
Samar was the venue of the famed 1999 International Elf Endurance competition, and earned for
the province an international mark of being one of the toughest jungle terrain ever encountered by experienced international outdoor players.
The province is likewise the host of the East Asia'ss biggest cave, measuring to about 2,982 hectares, which is a favorite destination of international spelunkers. It hosted this year'ss 3rd Annual Visayas Cave Congress as facilitated by Centro Outdoor Sports Unlimited.
But inspite of the being a home to possible great adventure destinations in the country, Samar has no established tourism office that will plan and program tourism activites, for these natural bounties becoming factors of development.
Thus, this opportunity for
the province to be showcased as the nation'ss top adventure destination is an assurance for the local government of Samar, to plan and invest on tourism if they want a total economic turn-around said Ricky Bautista, of Centro Outdoor Sports Unlimited, one of the biggest group of adventure tour guiding service providers in the Island of Samar.
