The new slip joint magnetic folder eliminates the back spring. The function of the spring is now being done by the rare earth magnet. The Neodymium (NdFeB) magnet is stronger than
conventional magnets and does not loose strength with age, classified a "permanent" magnet.
The action of the new knife is amazingly smooth with no spring rubbing on the end of the tang. The blade pivots between two bronze spacers and nothing else touches the blade. There is no
"bushing" and none is needed. There is no side play in the blade at all and no lateral play either as the tang is held in place by the magnet. A small amount of pressure on the thumb stud
sends the blade flying into the open position.
Knifemaker Turnbull comments on his groundbreaking invention. "I have long been fascinated by magnets and magnetism but it was not until I discovered the ready availability of really
powerful rare earth magnets that I considered the possibility of using magnetism to provide a way to control the blade action in a slip joint folder." Turnbull added, "After trying a half
dozen different shapes and sizes, I found that the blade could be retained in the closed position and when opened, the blade could be held in that position also. All by correctly
positioning a single magnet. The magnet is stationary and only the blade moves. The blade in fact is the only moving part in the knife. The magnet performs the function of the spring in a
conventional slip joint folder."
