RedRum Sportfishing, the premier provider of personalized deep sea fishing charters in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, is pleased to announce that they placed first in the Western Outdoor News Tuna Tournament aboard its 28's Californian ReelRum. It was the first time the company placed first in the tournament; the same team won third place in this tournament in 2006.
The Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot is a tournament the company has held near and dear for years. Some might even balk at calling it a tournament, as for most participants it is a 4 day
party with 2 days of fishing in between. From welcome party'ss, to cocktail party'ss, to weigh ins and awards banquets the theme is simple; come to Cabo and have a good time with a bunch
of like-minded fishermen. With the relatively inexpensive entry fee, this is a tournament that the average Joe has grown to love.
Team RedRum consisted of business partners, Ryan and John Donovan, and Ryan Donovan'ss best friend Luis Vela, and two of their top crew members, Captain Omar Ruiz and Americo Andres.
Having a fleet of boats in Cabo, the team from RedRum Sportfishing felt pretty confident that they knew where to head for the winning fish as the tournament kicked off. Since a few big
Yellowfin had been caught in the preceding days at Gordo Banks, they decided to try their luck at that location on day one. But luck was not on their side that day. They chummed, fished
live bait, trolled lures; prayed, danced, and sang; all for naught. There were no Yellowfin hunting the banks that make up Gordo Banks, one of the Sea Of Cortez'ss most famous banks.
Thankfully, the tournament has a second day of fishing.
Day two came and Team RedRum had a different plan. Hearing tales of several nice Yellowfin that were caught on the Pacific on day one, the group decided to try their luck on the other
side of the arch. Team RedRum lined up with 95 other boats and went full throttle toward The Lighthouse on the Pacific. In no time at all they saw the crashing, jumping, dipping and
diving of porpoises. As any angler knows, this is a very good sign when trying to locate Tuna. Ten to fifteen other boats from the tournament had happened upon the same school of
porpoises, all with hopes of hoisting the trophy. There was only one problem, these porpoise weren'st chasing Tuna, they were simply cruising around playing games only a porpoise could
understand.
With frustrated anglers and crew aboard ReelRum, the group headed further out to sea. Searching, looking, and once again praying for further signs of life and action. Fifteen, twenty,
thirty miles from the friendly confines of the marina they searched. Things were looking bleak, and as John Donovan taught his son, Ryan, from a young age, a good luck nap was needed.
Ryan lay down on the engine cover and tried to think good thoughts. He changed shirts, switching to a lucky fishing shirt. He rid himself of the hat he was wearing, knowing that had to be
the problem. Finally, he gave a quick rub to the top pocket of my shirt, where a pendant from his late grandmother was stored. That should do it he thought, as he dozed off to the lull of
the diesel engine and the soft rolling of the swells.
If you have never had the opportunity to awake to the sound of a screaming reel, there is no sweeter sound. Especially during a tourney. The Penn 80 on the back right corner was screaming
and fortunate, or not, Ryan Donovan was first in the mad rush of teammates trying to set the hook on whatever may be biting the artificial lime green squid we had been trolling. Let'ss
just hope we have a tuna was all that consumed his thoughts.
As luck would have it, a Yellowfin had crashed the spread. After a short time they were able to spot the fish on the surface and Americo, Team RedRum'ss mate for the tournament, thought
there was a pretty nice fish on the line. But as the story goes with big Yellowfin, that was the last the team would see of the fish, for a very long time.
Minutes past, then hours. Take your time, watch your drag, fight the fish, but be smart. Braun and brut will get you nowhere with a monster tuna, this was a waiting game. Ryan was alone
in his fight; despite the encouragement of his teammates and the Captain'ss help in moving the boat, it was a solo battle.
A lot goes through your mind in an endurance battle like this, said Ryan Donovan, speaking about the long fight to reel the tuna in. Will the line snap Was the hook firmly set in the jaws
of the fish Can my back, shoulders, neck and arms hold up Take your time, think good thoughts, and rub Nana'ss pendant.
Donovan continued, The fish gods were smiling down on the boys from RedRum, and we couldn'st have been more appreciative. After 2 hours and 45 minutes, the fish sounded. She was done. She
had fought her heart out, and humbled a man of similar size. My teammate Luis was able to stick the fish with a perfect gaff to the back and we had her. Done deal right Wrong.
Team RedRum was now nearly 40 miles from Cabo with only little more than 3 hours to make back to the friendly confines of Marina Cabo San Lucas and the awaiting scale. Set the GPS, pull
in the lines and hold on; there was history to make. With the help of 5 grown men, the fish was hoisted as the crowd of several hundred on-lookers gazed at the magnificent beast that hung
in front of them. Pat McDonald, host and MC of the tournament, howled in surprise as he read the digital scale that held Team RedRum'ss fate.
The beauty weighed in at 244lbs. Team RedRum had scored the biggest fish in the tournament. Second place was more than 100lbs lighter and the crowd erupted. Team ReelRum; the local guys,
the guys on the small boat, the average Joe'ss, had done it.
What'ss so amazing about this win is that we not only took first place but we scored the second biggest fish in tournament history, said RedRum co-owner John Donovan. It'ss a great
milestone for RedRum Sportfishing, and we hope to pass along all the tips we learned to our customers so they too can share the joy we felt when that winning fish was hoisted up. Team
RedRum will be celebrating this win for a long time.
