NetClarity, Inc. today announces the release of FreeScan utility for free to scan Microsoft Windows laptops, desktops and servers to detect critical flaws not uncovered by traditional anti-virus or anti-spyware software and show how to close these holes and harden your personal computer.
The FreeScan utility is now available here: http://www.netclarity.net/freescan.html.
This Utility will uncover local host-based vulnerabilities known as Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) and will show you how to close them. Some can be closed with new patches
and security fixes from software vendors, others can be closed by turning off high risk services or those that are exploitable without a ready patch and others can only be blocked through
intelligent firewall reconfiguration.
According to USCERT, exploitation of CVEs are the root cause of downtime and successful hacker attacks. Some of the most successful malware attacks such as W.32, Sasser, Bugbear and
Melissa all exploited CVEs. If you don't have the hole, the exploit cannot cause you harm. If you have anti-virus or anti-spyware software installed it will only detect the exploit
attempting to gain access to your system or already existing on your system, if the anti-virus or anti-spyware solution has a proper signature test. If there is no signature, then you
won't know if you have the virus, worm, keylogger, Trojan or other malware. By taking a completely different approach, by removing your CVEs, you dramatically reduce the risk of hackers
and malware getting onto your computer (Source: http://www.uscert.gov/).
"As a member of MITRE's OVAL (Open Vulnerability Assessment Language) Advisory Board, I'm pleased to say we're providing a very easy to use FreeScan utility for Microsoft Windows that is
powered by MITRE's OVAL database and guaranteed to find holes that no anti-virus program or anti-spyware program will find. Once you close these holes, it's like fixing a leak in your
plumbing instead of constantly pumping out a flooded basement," said Gary S. Miliefsky, Founder & Chief Technology Officer, NetClarity, Inc. "With this free utility, you will finally
be able to see what a hacker or malware would exploit and have a chance to fix it and harden your personal computer before they take advantage of these holes."
