Midbrook Performs ASTM Medical Testing

Hospitals work hard to keep their facilities free from contamination and infection. Infections are expensive and cause unnecessary suffering for the patients unfortunate enough to acquire one. Infections can spread via contamination within the hospital, but they can also spread when equipment with pre-existing particulates are brought into the facility.

It is possible for particulates, from the human body or elements used in the manufacturing process, to attach themselves to manufactured products.

If particulates are present on a medical device, they can potentially be released. The particles, if released during use on a patient, can become lodged in the patient's8217;s vascular capillary system and put the patient at risk.

Hospital acquired infection related expenditures cost facilities millions of dollars every year. By keeping their facility in a constant state of cleanliness, hospitals can limit the costs associated with HAIs and provide better care for their patients.

Due to the costs and risks associated with infections, hospitals are looking for ways to guarantee that equipment brought into their facility is free of dangerous particulates. This is in addition to the extensive decontamination procedures and equipment already present for use within the hospital.

Midbrook (http://midbrook.com/) has been conducting similar cleanliness testing in their technology lab for 20 years, for a variety of other industries. The addition of medical particulate testing, specifically the ability to perform gravimetric testing on medical devices to the ASTM standard.

's8220;We started the lab because automotive suppliers needed clean parts, but had no way to verify if their cleaning process was actually accomplishing that goal,'s8221; said Business Development Director Jamie Crowley.

's8220;The lab is a popular service here at Midbrook 's8211; we's8217;re capable of testing multiple different specifications for multiple industries with the advanced equipment we's8217;ve installed,'s8221; said Crowley.

The technology lab allows Midbrook, as an original manufacturer of equipment for hospitals (http://midbrook.com/equipment/medical), to ensure that they are sending out clean products that will not endanger patients.

's8220;It's8217;s important that we test all our products to make sure they are as clean as possible when they exit our facility,'s8221; says Crowley.

's8220;We also have the capability to test products from other manufacturers and ensure their safety as well's8221;, he added.

Midbrook performs ISO 16232 Testing (http://midbrook.com/technology/iso_16232), tests to various manufacturer specifications; customer developed specifications, and customized specifications. Medical testing is a logical addition to their capabilities.

's8220;Our lab is very proficient at testing 's8211; the ASTM standard calls for a Gravimetric test, which we have extensive experience with,'s8221; says Crowley.

Midbrook can work with the customer to design a cleanliness specification (http://midbrook.com/technology/cleanliness) that meets their specifications. The FDA looks at the total particulate load during clinical use, and is specifically interested in the number and size of particulates shed and where they originate from.

's8220;We can perform a standard particulate test, but we can also tailor it to a specific customers needs,'s8221; said Crowley. 's8220;Our lab will work directly with a customer to get them the information they need.'s8221;
