Vista Software today announced the release of their new VistaDB Server 2.0 to beta as part of their 2.0.16 release. VistaDB Server is built on top of the company's embedded VistaDB
database engine to provides true client/server database management for multi-user applications that run in shared network environments, local area networks and for applications that need
to access data remotely.
"Our new VistaDB Server provides robust, high-speed client/server database management for small to midsize multi-user applications in a small 600KB footprint," stated Anthony Carrabino,
President and CEO of Vista Software. "VistaDB Server delivers 10 to 30 times performance gains over our existing VistaDB embedded configurations when managing multiple users in a shared
network environment. That type of performance gain is absolutely fantastic and it should be well received by our customers that wish to implement a client/server architecture."
Key benefits of VistaDB Server over the MSDE are the small 600KB footprint and ease of deployment. Carrabino went on to say that VistaDB Server works much like the MSDE and SQL Express so
the learning curve is minimal. Applications developed using VistaDB .NET or VistaDB VCL components connect to a VistaDB Server using TCP/IP and work with databases that reside on servers
or remote machines. These VistaDB client applications send SQL-92 based commands (e.g. SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE etc.) to the VistaDB Server for processing. Depending on the type of SQL
command, VistaDB Server may or may not return a result set back to the client for further processing. This processing is all managed over a secure TCP/IP connection.
The product is available in two licensing models. VistaDB Server is available as a Single Deployment License (SDL) for $329, which includes 2 copies of the VistaDB Server (one for
development and one for deployment) and grants the customer Authorized Reseller status. As an Authorized Reseller, the customer is entitled to make subsequent purchases of the SDL for
$129 each, which can be used for deployment or for resale. The second licensing model is the Unlimited Deployment License (UDL) which sells for $2,179. The UDL lets developers deploy an
unlimited number of VistaDB Servers along with an application. The UDL does not allow the VistaDB Server to be resold.
VistaDB Server has been released to beta with the company's latest build numbered 2.0.16. This release includes updates to the VistaDB .NET Provider and VistaDB VCL components that
provide support for new VistaDB Server.
