May 19, 2005 -- On Saturday, May 21 at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis, more than 300 walkers, including parent groups, adoptive and foster families, extended families, friends, co-workers, adoption professionals, and others who wish to show their support for waiting children who dream of finding loving, permanent families will help raise funds to support programs and services of the North American Council on Adoptable Children. NACAC's AdoptWalk 5K is a 10:00 a.m. fundraising and awareness-raising walk around the lake followed by a picnic at the Nokomis Community Center. Funds raised will support NACAC's work to support and train adoptive parents, educate adoption professionals, and provide services and information to families who have adopted children with special needs. AdoptWalk is also designed to raise public awareness about the need to find permanent families for all children. Almost 700 children are waiting in Minnesota's foster care system for caring people to open their hearts and homes and provide them with a permanent, loving family. NACAC will have an information booth where adoption resource and educational materials will be available. Sponsors of AdoptWalk are the Granite Foundation, Pepsi, Aquafina, Salsa Lisa, Target Adoption Network, Jockey, and Unisys. In North America, over 150,000 children who cannot remain with their birth families wait in foster care for a permanent, loving family. These children - often labeled hard to place - are mostly school-aged. Many are brothers and sisters who must be placed together. Some are medically fragile or drug-or alcohol-exposed. Most have physical, mental, or emotional difficulties. Many are children of color. Founded in 1974 by adoptive parents, the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) is committed to meeting the needs of waiting children and the families who adopt them.
