Dahn Yoga connects Mind and Body and Fathers and Sons

It is never too early to teach children about the power of their mind and ability to make the right life choices. That's8217;s the basic philosophy behind the children's8217;s programs offered through Dahn Yoga.

Four year-old Julian is a typical rambunctious boy. His dad, Dave Beal, is an elementary school teacher in Long Island, New York. He is also a Dahn Yoga instructor, where, in addition to teaching classes for adults, he teaches a 's8220;Yoga for Kids's8221; class on Saturdays. 's8220;The classes are designed to build confidence, teach kids how to be in control of their emotions and to find their inner strength,'s8221; said Beal. They also practice exercises that help them overcome some of their fears about what they can do from a physical standpoint. Learning that they are capable of so much more than they thought helps build their self esteem, according to Beal.

Julian loves the dancing and exercise parts of the class but he is also learning important lessons beyond building physical strength and coordination. Even at his young age, he grasps that he has the power to control his reactions to different situations. 's8220;Through the kids classes at the Dahn center, he now understands the concept of choice; that we each possess the power to control how we can respond to each situation. Also, the group or community dynamic of the classes teaches the kids about responsibility, and how their choices affect the group, not just the individual.'s8221; says his dad.

Experts believe that teaching the concepts of choice and responsibility at a young age may help the children deal with the commonly felt angst often associated with the teen years. Since these students have learned the tools about choice and responsibility they may be less likely to rebel or embrace destructive behaviors.

By the 12th class in the program, Beal has his young Dahn Yoga students asking themselves a heady question: 's8220;What do I want to do with my life's8221; That seems to be a fairly grown-up question for 4 to 12 year olds, but according to Beal it fosters an internal dialogue that reinforces the lessons the children have been learning: they have the power to positively influence their life and the path they take into adulthood; that peace within the family and community starts with each individual creating their own happiness. Both are basic premises of Dahn Yoga.

Dahn Yoga (sometimes referred to as Dahn Hak or Dahnhak) began as an ancient Korean training program to educate the population on how to develop both the mind and the body. 's8220;Dahn's8221; means energy, vitality, and origin of life, and Hak means study, philosophy, and theory. Through Dahn Yoga, practitioners learn how to listen to their bodies, rest their minds, and become more reflective and calm.

Both Beal and his partner, Dawn Quaresima, Julian's8217;s mom, embrace the Dahn teachings throughout their lives. 's8220;Raising a child can be stressful and Dahn helps us be more patient parents,'s8221; said Beal.
