Glenn Mangurian Presents at UMass Amherst Networking Event

The majority of the alumni attending thought of networking as a verb, with only a few raising their hands for networking as a noun. I think of it as a noun; and by the end of tonight, you will too, stated Glenn.

Glenn advised attendees that, when you come to a networking event like this, you need to prepare -- both emotionally and mentally. Before you even get to the networking event, you need to decide:

>    What type of presence you will have

>    Why you are there

>    What is going to attract people to you

>    Why someone should care about meeting you

>    How you will work the room

>    how you will disengage from people respectfully

Disengaging from a conversation when you are at an event is probably the hardest part of networking for everyone, said Glenn. People who are masters at this have a six- to eight-sentence conversation, and then move on. If your conversation lasts for five or more minutes, you have matched up against someone like you, who does not know how to disengage.

Think of network as a noun, he continued. A network of relationships is your social capital. These relationships are established over time and they have value.

Glenn closed his presentation with two important pieces of advice: First, value relationships, they are the most important thing in your life. Second, always be authentic in your giving and never expect anything in return. You will be surprised how much you get back when you need it.
