Buying a piano can represent one of the largest individual investments a person can make, next to a home or automobile. It is also one of the most difficult decisions, considering that some 60,000 new acoustic pianos, made by 30 builders in a dozen countries under 70 brand names, are sold in the United States each year.
Now, Acoustic 's38; Digital Piano Buyer, available for free on the Internet (www.pianobuyer.com) and as a print publication in bookstores (list
price: $24.95), provides an easy to use, authoritative guide to help piano buyers navigate the complex market.
The new guide is compiled by Larry Fine, the top authority on the piano industry, who has published The Piano Book: Buying 's38; Owning a New or Used Piano (Brookside Press), the
industry'ss standard consumer reference work since its inaugural publication in 1987.
To keep up with a rapidly changing market, Fine has updated his work every year since 1996 by publishing an annual consumer-oriented supplement to The Piano Book, which is being replaced
by the new Acoustic 's38; Digital Piano Buyer.
The quantity and quality of pianos have increased in the last two decades and unlike automobiles or consumer electronics, for example, there aren'st many authoritative sources where a
person can turn to get quality advice, said Fine. This book levels the playing field by providing not only accurate pricing information for new and used pianos, but also basic information
that makes it easier to determine which piano or digital keyboard makes the best fit.
Hitting the bookstores and the Internet beginning September 2009, the advertising-sponsored color-illustrated hybrid book and magazine will be published twice a year.
The book aspect consists of brief, but informative articles and tips on basic piano-buying issues, such as what to look for when buying a new, used, or restored acoustic, digital, or
player piano. These articles will remain constant from issue to issue. The magazine portion will feature rotating content, including manufacturer profiles, spotlights on particular
technologies and rebuilders, product reviews, and pricing information, which is updated each issue to adapt to market changes. The pricing information is also available on the website in
a free, searchable database, allowing consumers to quickly compare acoustic piano brands and models.
The Piano Book is a 'smust read's for those who crave the finer technical details, said Fine. But in the interest of brevity and simplicity, we chose to make Piano Buyer a lighter, more
entertaining read that lets consumers get up to speed quickly and be confident in their ability to distinguish the subtle differences between models.
