Grandma Has It Right Best Medicine for Kids Coughs Is Honey

A recent scientific study confirms what Grandmas have known for generations: honey is the best 'medicine' for coughs due to colds and flu.

While dozens of commercial cough syrups are available for children, none proved as effective as honey, according to Healthy Kids Newswire (www.healthykidsnewswire.com), which offers doctor-approved, common-sense health news and features for loving parents.

Healthy Kids Newswire based its report, in part, on the writings of Dr. Harley A. Rotbart, professor and vice chairman of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children's Hospital of Denver. Dr. Rotbart is the author of the bestselling children's health book, Germ Proof Your Kids: The Complete Guide to Protecting (without Overprotecting) Your Family from Infections.

"Over-the-counter medicines don't work in kids," writes Dr. Rotbart on his web site, www.germproofyourkids.com. In the recent scientific study, Dr. Rotbart says, researchers found that "honey performed better than cough medicine or no treatment at all in easing the cough and helping kids sleep through the cough."

Honey is easily administered in tea, milk or straight up, he says. Honey is not, however, safe for children younger than 15 months of age.

Healthy Kids Newswire also cites Dr. Rotbart's book, Germ Proof Your Kids, in explaining that cough experts - in guidelines issued in January 2006 - recommend that all children under the age of 15 years avoid over-the-counter cough medicines. The recommendation pertains to both expectorants and antitussives, Dr. Rotbart writes.

"You would think based on all the advertisements for kids' cough medicines that the syrups must really work," says Healthy Kids Newswire. "But as Dr. Rotbart points out, the medicines seem to work only on mom and dad's urge to do something to help their kids, not on the kids themselves or their coughs."

Healthy Kids Newswire says that parents who want to learn more about cough medicines and their associated risks should visit Dr. Rotbart's web site, www.germproofyourkids.com or pick up a copy of Germ Proof Your Kids, available now on Amazon.com.
