Leader in High Energy Efficient Heat Line Products Announces Results of CARAPACE Case Study

In November 2007, Heat-Line installed a Carapace municipal and residential freeze protection water pipe system in Haliburton County, Ontario to conduct an energy efficiency case study. At the time, no one could have guessed that the winter would be one of the coldest and longest lasting in years. Remarkably, even with average temperatures much colder than normal, the Carapace freeze protection water pipe system performed exceptionally well, consuming just 1821 KWH of electricity over the course of the study from November 10 until April 25, 2008. The product, which measured 270 foot (82 meter), operated continuously for 5 months, providing freeze protection at an average rate of just 5 cents per KWH. Incredibly, the total cost in electricity to operate the system over the entire period was a mere $91.05.

Heat-Line's President and CEO, Lorne Heise, was confident that the Carapace system would perform very well, especially from an energy usage point of view, but was astonished with the actual case study results. "Carapace's outstanding energy saving is due to the patented product design where the conductive polymer heater or heating cable is always in full lineal contact with the polyethylene pipe wall. This provides superior heat conduction and transfer. The design also eliminates cold spots where a standard water pipe may not receive heat under extremely cold conditions because of poor heating cable contact", explains Heise. "Old technologies could easily consume more than 10 times the power, as they are unable to be insulated. The conductive polymer or self-regulating heating cable technology found in all of our Heat-Line products maximizes efficiency", adds Heise.

Many Carapace systems are currently providing freeze protection in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. In places such as the Canadian Arctic and circumpolar regions, Carapace offers a reliable and efficient freeze protection solution, even in the coldest temperatures, for industry, business and individuals who require consistent water delivery. The system has also gained wide recognition in Canada's large mining and exploration industry.

Since Heat-Line first introduced the Carapace system approximately 3 years ago, sales for Carapace have been on a steep increase. By delivering exceptional energy savings and reliable service, as demonstrated by this winter's case study, Carapace will continue to be an outstanding product for Heat-Line, capturing a even larger share of the water-pipe protection and freeze protection market.
