Cutsforth Inc. has published literature that details EASYchange's174;, their comprehensive brush holders that significantly reduce maintenance costs and practically eliminates the unplanned brush gear/collector ring outages associated with large turbine generators. The product is so unique that it is a finalist in a very prestigious Product-Of-The-Year competition.
Valuable Information
The literature contains valuable information about the company and its products and includes: product data; corporate profile; specifications; photography; before and after installation
photography; product photography; types of problems solved; as well as installation and application detail.
It is part of a major investment by Cutsforth to inform end users how an EASYchange's174; system can virtually eliminate downtime when related to turbine generator brush maintenance. It
should prove of value to anyone involved in the maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) of generators in power plants and related other types of rotating equipment used in industrial
plants, in particular those that generate power.
The Cutsforth Story
The story begins with Dave Cutsforth who had spent many years visiting power plants across North America to help them with brush gear maintenance procedures. In 1990, based on certain
proprietary process and procedures he had developed, founded the company. At the time, power plants were shutting down to perform maintenance procedures on collector rings and brush
holders. If the ring or brush holder failed, so would the generator. Either way, plants had to deal with costly downtime and unplanned outages.
Their first patent was a tool used to resurface commutators on large motors without having to shut down. On-line truing a phrase used every day in the power industry was first coined by
Dave. The next patent was a process that regrooves the spiral grooves on turbine generator rings, an off-line process that also reduces maintenance time and costs.
Ten years later, Dave and his son Rob went on to patent a number of products to eliminate costly downtime. Today, the Cutsforth truing process, brush holders and other products and
services are used in coal, nuclear and wind power plants nationwide. In addition, the company holds patent protection on eight related products with an additional four pending.
The Root Cause of the Problem
According to Dave Cutsforth, During my many years of field repair service, I have personally repaired and have seen thousands of turbine generators with collector ring problems. The more
I got involved the more I knew that there was a common denominator in brush and collector ring failure. That was proven to be poor brush holder design, the root cause of the problem.
A Revolutionary Brush Holder System
Cutsforth knew that if he could eliminate the problem of poor brush holder design focusing on all the factors that affect the quality of the brush to ring connection, plant maintenance
costs could be significantly reduced. Also an innovator, Rob invented EASYchange's174; a brush holder system that maintains a perfect connection between the brushes and the collector
rings.
Once installed it virtually eliminates collector ring wear as well as common failures attributed to faulty brush holder design. EASYchange's174; has proven to eliminate problems caused
by; carbon deposits, brush binding, poor spring tension and poor terminal connections and more. What makes the product so unique is the fact that brushes are changed on-line without the
need for a shutdown.
To illustrate the kind of value EASYchange's174; brings to the market, it is a finalist in the Product of the Year, conducted by a leading trade magazine. It is a prestigious honor
awarded only to those products that fall into a best maintenance practice category. Only products that can help a plant operate better, faster and more efficiently were eligible.
Cutsforth - Today
The company today is organized into Field Services and Products divisions. Cutsforth Field Services provides on-line truing of collector rings and commutators. With this process they
return collector ring surfaces to original OEM levels or better.Field Services also installs the EASYchange removable brush holder system.
Cutsforth Inc., designs and markets the EASYchange removable brush holder system and a wide range of collector rings for applications including; wound rotor motors, synchronous motors,
stream and combustion turbine generators, hydro generator, and wind power generators
Cutsforth - The Future
According to Rob Cutsforth, In a relatively short period of time, we grew from a regional company to one that does business across the globe. The reason for this growth is simple - we
earned a reputation for our ability to help power plants reduce maintenance times and make repairs on turbine generators without the need to shutdown.
Cutsforth continued, There are very few companies that do what we do. Our goal is to be the number one, single source supplier of brush holders and maintenance services for critical slip
ring applications. To that end, we continue to invest heavily in people, products and support. Take our completed distribution center as an example. Recently completed, it allows us to
maintain large inventories, which ensures the fastest possible service and turnaround time. In addition, all of our support material, including our website, remains a work-in-progress.
After all, an informed customer is the best customer.
Interactive Spreadsheet
An extremely useful interactive spreadsheet is available at www.cutsforth.com. Extremely user friendly, to obtain results an end user merely plugs
in their respective numbers to calculate the savings realized by performing collector ring maintenance while on-line, without the need to shut down.
