Supporting school lunch programs in these countries helps reduce child hunger, promotes education and provides a foundation for progress and reconstruction. Mr. Lambers has published a free booklet titled "Ending Child Hunger: School Lunches for Kids Around the World" to promote this message.
Included in the booklet are copies of articles titled "Expanding the McGovern-Dole Global School Feeding Program,"School Lunches for Kids Around the World" and "Surge of Humanitarian Aid Needed in Iraq." The article on Iraq highlights the importance of supporting charities doing humanitarian work in Iraq, such as the United Nations World Food Programme and UNICEF. The cause of peace would be better served in Iraq with an increased emphasis on fighting hunger and poverty.
Lambers calls for the U.S. to expand the McGovern-Dole Food for Education Program which provides school lunches to children in poor countries. The Senate is currently considering whether to expand and make mandatory McGovern-Dole funding as part of the 2007 Farm Bill.
Other programs that bolster free market reforms around the world, such as "Food for Progress," should also be expanded as part of the Farm Bill.
Lambers uses historical examples to show America's great tradition of helping children around the world such as in post-war Austria and the Marshall Plan. Today, school lunch programs are a significant part of reconstruction in countries like Afghanistan.
