"Today, we embark on the journey to bring the City of Monroe back to life," stated Monroe City Council candidate Nick Polyzos.
The 25-year-old Polyzos stepped into the ring on July 1st, filing his candidacy at the Union County Board of Elections.
Polyzos has chaired the Union County Young Republicans since the group's formation in July 2004. He has been instrumental in spearheading the campaign to stop a toll road being proposed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation in Union County.
After a 5-2 vote in favor of the toll road by the current council, as well as their support of a citywide prepared meals tax, Polyzos decided to run for one of the three seats up for grabs this year.
Other issues that are to be addressed include involuntary annexation of large neighborhoods to increase the tax base, lack of fire and police protection in the new areas, as well as waste removal.
"I am not in it for the glory, the name recognition or ego. I am running to help a dying city. Monroe, in its illustrious past, was a productive and vibrant town. If elected, I will work to make that dream a reality again."
