Freedom Walk for Immigration No One Is Illegal



Public demonstrations and private conversations continue throughout our nation as immigration shows its staying power as a front burner issue. Last week, both houses of Congress promised they would hold hearings on the subject and editorials across the country have lamented this as the demise of S.2611, the so-called Hagel-Martinez 's8220;Compromise.'s8221;



As it happens, Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana (HML), the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) and other members of the March 25th Coalition welcome such an outcome and will continue to work in the coming weeks toward its defeat. Along these lines, Ms. Azul-Christian Caravaggio, a supporter of the coalition and Hermandad, kicks off 's8220;Freedom Walk for Immigration/No One Is Illegal's8221; this Saturday morning in Atlanta, Georgia.

Why 's8211; Ms. Caravaggio challenges the notion that any human being is 's8220;illegal's8221; and hopes to raise the idea that human rights should not have to be earned.Upon arrival in Washington, DC, Ms. Caravaggio will begin a hunger strike.

The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) began in January, 2001 as a union of grassroots immigrant leaders, groups and their allies. The genesis for this formation was a bill in the Tennessee legislature promising immigrants without social security numbers access to driver'ss licenses. Several groups are involved in the coalition, including, but not limited to, Latinos, Nigerians, Somalians, Iranians, Kurds and Egyptians. The TIRRC is led primarily by immigrants and refugees and advocates and defends the rights of all immigrants and refugees regardless of immigration status.
