House Speaker Karen Minnis at City Club May 13

April 30, 2005 -- At its weekly Friday Forum luncheon on May 13, City Club of Portland welcomes Speaker of the Oregon House Rep. Karen Minnis (R-Wood Village) in a presentation titled "Calling the Vote: Issues Facing the 2005 Oregon Legislature and the Future of Our State."

"The sky is not falling," wrote Rep. Minnis in a recent op-ed piece responding to The Oregonian's editorial comment that the Legislature has agreed to "an overall budget number [$12.393 billion] set too low to sustain the state's critical services." Rather, Minnis said, the state must live within "the reality set by the electorate" and that means "balancing the state's responsibilities to fund schools, protect its citizens and care for those who truly cannot care for themselves." On Friday, May 13 - the same day the state economist releases revenue forecasts - City Club welcomes Portland native Minnis to discuss the state's spending priorities and other tough choices facing the 2005 Legislature.

City Club's Friday Forum, which is open to the public, will be held in the third-floor ballroom of the Governor Hotel (614 S.W. 11th Ave.). Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Program begins at 12:15 p.m. and concludes at 1:15 p.m. Luncheon reservations must be made online at www.pdxcityclub.org or by calling 503-228-7231, ext. 103 or 102, by 2 p.m. Wed., May 11 (members only may call 503-241-9242). Luncheon tickets are $18 ($16 for members of City Club). Coffee/tea table tickets are $5 at the door. General seating, available at the door, is $5 (free for members of City Club).
