Ismael Betancourt to Announce Candidacy Run for NY City Council District...

April 28, 2005 -- Ismael Betancourt, a business and social entrepreneur, will announce his candidacy run for City Council, District 13, at LQ, 511 Lexington Ave., on Thursday, April 28th at 6 pm.

The widely diverse Council District 13 encompasses the following Bronx neighborhoods: Allerton, City Island, Country Club, Morris Park, Pelham Bay, Pelham Parkway, Throggs Neck, Van Nest, Waterbury - LaSalle, Westchester Square, and Zerega.

Born in Puerto Rico, Betancourt attended New York City public schools and served in the U.S. Air Force. After receiving an honorable discharge for his military service, Ismael Betancourt married Anna Dieppa, his wife for 41 years. Betancourt earned a B.S. from Columbia University and a MBA from the Harvard Business School. Betancourt's foodservice business, founded in the South Bronx, created jobs for more than 100 Bronx residents. Betancourt has advised the city, state and federal governments, has worked as a Professor of Business for more than 10 years, and has been a Management Consultant for several firms. He has been active in the community in the areas of inter-group relations, education, cultural affairs, small business, economic development, and communications. He currently runs a not-for-profit organization, affiliated with the United Nations, which produces and hosts 50-50, a public access T.V. show broadcast by Bronxnet every Sunday at 1:30pm. At this time of rapid change and complexity, Betancourt is uniquely prepared to represent the residents of the 13th CD and to play a leadership role in the City Council.

Betancourt is well positioned to win the 2005 race for the 13th CD, where the incumbent is term limited. In 2003 Betancourt came in second to the incumbent in a three-candidate primary election for the 13th CD seat. In this diverse district, Latinos comprise 38% of the population and 46% of the voters that vote in a primary election. Betancourt is now the only Latino running in a crowded, five-candidate field. But Betancourt, who has spent decades promoting better inter-group relations, will work to earn the votes from all who agree with his platform. As Betancourt repeatedly points out, "you do not have to be a Latino to support Betancourt for the City Council." He has a track record of helping to create opportunities for people of all religions, races, ethnicities, genders and age groups.
