Despite emerging interest in Arabic language courses, the Los Angeles Times recently reported that the language is only taught at approximately 230 colleges nationwide. As a relatively limited course offering stateside, students who do study the Arabic language often must place their studies on hold should they choose to participate in a study abroad program.
"There is no question the demand for Arabic language instruction outweighs supply, and limited access to this discipline tends to halt the study of Arabic when students choose to study abroad in countries where Arabic is not the spoken language," explains Dr. William Davey, CEA vice president of academic affairs. "Given the increasing relevance of the Arabic language in the global economy, we are providing students heightened access to such courses to become interculturally competent citizens."
Starting this summer, CEA GlobalCampus: Seville will offer the following Arabic language course options:
- Beginning Arabic I - This course introduces students to the phonetics and basics of writing the Arabic language. Learning is reinforced through structured activities which expose students to an overview of the Arabic culture.
- Understanding the Arab World - This course introduces students to the widely misunderstood and often misrepresented Arab world. Coursework covers a wide range of social, political and economic issues against the backdrop of Arab culture in Seville.
"Offering Arabic language courses at the CEA GlobalCampus: Seville provides students an opportunity to continue their studies in a western country, rich in Arabic history and flavor resulting from a seven century Moorish occupation," continues Dr. Davey. "From the 14th century Alhambra Palace to Granada's Cathedral, students will supplement their Arabic language studies with first-hand interaction with the relics of the rich Arabic culture, creating a more profound learning experience."
In addition to Arabic language courses, CEA GlobalCampus: Seville offers Humanities & Spanish Language, and Liberal Arts & Social Sciences programs.
