Carnival Cruise Lines Settles Seafarer Wage Class Action for 6.24 Million



Carnival Corporation has agreed to pay $6.25 million to settle a class action case filed against the cruise line by its seafaring workers who alleged that Carnival had failed to pay the workers's8217; full wages, including overtime (Case No: 05-22968-Civ-Cooke/Kline).



The settlement also requires Carnival to provide additional disclosure in its contracts regarding how tips are treated as overtime compensation, and to operate a grievance and arbitration procedure for wage claims. In the settlement, Carnival denies liability in the pending litigation.



Commenting on the settlement, plaintiffs's8217; attorney Tucker Ronzetti, of Miami law firm Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton, said, 's8220;We are pleased that the parties have been able to resolve this dispute in a way that provides substantial relief to the seafaring workers.'s8221; Mr. Ronzetti is co-class counsel for the workers along with Julio Ayala of the Crewmember and Maritime Advocacy Center and Craig Downs of Miami law firm Downs Brill Whitehead.
