Reinventing themselves after 25 years of successful magazine publishing, the Destlers now provide design, layout, and art production for other publishers looking to save money. Every dozen years or so, the entrepreneurial couple launch themselves into a new business. For 2008, they have sold their national youth baseball magazine, Junior Baseball, and started The Magazine Factory, which can be seen at www.magazinefactory.net.
The Magazine Factory is timed perfectly with a slumping economy to help struggling publishers save money, time, and even space. Outsourcing is the buzzword today and The Magazine Factory
becomes an outside art department, replacing full-time production staff, art directors, and the payroll, taxes, insurance, benefits, office space, etc., that requires.
Traditional print publishing is facing daunting challenges today brought about by the internet, reduced ad revenue, spiralling manufacturing costs, and now the economic recession. The
Destlers look forward to helping publishers, companies, associations, and other entities that produce magazines, catalogs, or newsletters cut costs, increase profits, and thrive.
It was back in 1985 when Dave and Dayna Destler, owners of a small commerical graphic design studio in the suburbs of Los Angeles, decided to get into the publishing business. We saw this
new invention, desktop publishing, coming into the picture and knew our traditional hand-generated art was becoming obsolete fast. Using our creative and business skills, we decided to
get into magazine publishing.
A new magazine called British Car 's38; Bike was conceived, designed, and launched, inspired by Dave'ss hobby of classic British vehicles. The title was soon shortened to British Car as
the motorcycles were removed from the mix and ad revenue soared. After their young son showed great interest in baseball, the Destlers recognized a new opportunity. British Car was sold
in 1996, and that same year, Junior Baseball was launched. Known as America'ss Youth Baseball Magazine, Junior Baseball was the Destler'ss focus until 2008, when they decided to sell it
after 12 years.
The Magazine Factory - the couple'ss latest venture - offers services which include designing and creating new publications from scratch, complete magazine or catalog redesigns, partial
redesigns and freshening, or continuing an existing magazine'ss look and branding without the readers even noticing there'ss been a change. They charge a flat per-page rate, making it
simple for the clients to budget and project their expenses.
Magazine production involves taking the raw editorial and photos and creating a cohesive, professional, visually-appealing presentation, ready for print. It'ss not easy to create
world-class results, but the Destlers's 25 years of experience with their own magazines prove they are more than capable. We decided on this new direction as it'ss our strong point -
building magazines, catalogs, and newsletters, explained Dayna. And our experience in all aspects of publishing, not just art, provides our clients with a knowledgeable partner through
the entire workflow process, added Dave. We can concentrate on what we do best. We can make a brand-new publisher look like he'ss been in the business for 25 years.
