He will be speaking as part of the Federal Health Architecture (FHA) program office which functions within the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). CONNECT Seminar 's09 is the inaugural user conference for the CONNECT gateway solution taking place this week in Washington, DC.
Drawing upon his experience as a technical lead for the development of the CONNECT gateway, Westberg will provide attendees with a detailed introduction to the technology'ss significant
capabilities for health information exchange (HIE). He will be joined by Robert Cothren, Ph.D., who served as an enterprise architect for the project. Westberg will also lead three
additional sessions focused on installing and configuring the CONNECT gateway, testing the solution, and developing adapters for the technology.
According to the CONNECT Community portal (http://www.connectopensource.org/display/Gateway/CONNECT+Community+Portal), CONNECT is an open source
software gateway that connects an organizations's health IT systems into health information exchanges using Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) conventions, agreements and core
services to better serve patients throughout the United States. Built through collaboration of more than 20 federal agencies, the CONNECT gateway can help organizations reap the benefits
of health information exchange with other healthcare institutions throughout the country.
CONNECT Seminar 's09 brings together public and private sector entities to discuss business and technical strategies for implementing the CONNECT gateway. Featured presenters include Vish
Sankaran, Program Director for the Federal Health Architecture, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. David
Blumenthal, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Department of Health and Human Services; Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer and Associate Director for Technology,
Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President; the Honorable W. Scott Gould, the Department of Veterans Affairs Deputy Secretary; and Brian Behlendorf,
Co-Founder, Apache Software Foundation, Director at CollabNet and Board Member for the Mozilla Foundation
As Agilex's principal architect for healthcare, Westberg brings more than twenty years of experience in designing, engineering and developing complex health information technology
systems. Prior to the CONNECT project, he led the technical team implementing system-wide sharing of medical data between the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs as well as the
team developing the Terminology Service Bureau ontology system for the Military Health System (MHS). He has also played an active role within a number of key industry groups, including
Health Level 7 (HL7), the Andover Working Group and the Microsoft Healthcare Users Group.
With secure health information exchange emerging as a critical national priority, there is widespread interest in leveraging the CONNECT gateway with more than a thousand individuals
having pre-registered to attend CONNECT Seminar 's09, said Westberg. I look forward to sharing with these early adopters invaluable lessons learned from implementing the solution in a
number of environments over the past year.
