The Walkie Talkies Team Up For Weekend To End Breast Cancer

May 6, 2005 -- Anar Shamji and Karima Devraj both North Shore residents are also very successful in their respective business ventures. They are hoping to bring the same synergy and enthusiasm into their 1st attempt at fund-raising. They are looking for support from the community at large.

12 years ago, Anar and Karima began walking every morning to try and lose some weight. Each morning at 5:30 am, rain or shine, they would trudge out of their homes, baggy eyed and bed headed, determined to walk off those extra pounds. It became a tradition.

Over the years they realized that at times their mouths moved faster than their legs -- whether it was sports, family, business, politics, counselling, or just plain venting. The talking also became a tradition.

These are their talents. Walking and Talking. Their team name, not surprisingly, is "The Walkie Talkies".

Although they haven't personally been touched by cancer, they have most definitely been affected by this devasting disease. Anar and Karima decided to put their talents to good use benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation.

On August 20th, they begin walking. 60 kilometers in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer - a two-day 60 km walk through the neighbourhoods of Vancouver. Proceeds benefit BC Cancer Foundation, funding important breast cancer research, education, services and care.

From now until then, they are talking. Talking to YOU - our friends, family, neighbours, co-workers -- frankly, they are talking to anybody who will listen. They hope that you join them in the fight against this terrible disease that affects not only the victims, but their friends and family too. They are asking for your support in making a difference. Please choose your method of support:

- Host or attend a fundraising event or workshop
- Henna Artistry - May 14th
- Belly Dancing Workshop - June 20th
- Samosa Making Workshop (you provide the space, they will do the work)
- Give them moral support - words of encouragement, jokes and hugs are most welcome
- Financially support them through donations
- Join their team and walk and talk along with them
