African TV Network Brings African Television Programming to U.S.



This week, a US-based African TV Network announced plans to lease Comcast cable channels in the Baltimore and Washington DC areas. The plan is to expand the availability in the U.S. of television programs produced in Africa.



Starting July 31, audiences will be able to see African TV Network programming on Comcast ch. 81 in Baltimore County, ch. 79 in Baltimore City, and ch. 77 in Washington DC, said Clement Afforo, founder of the African TV Network.



The Network offers a wide selection of television programs created in Africa, ranging from news, and current affairs, to sports coverage, to Africa'ss always popular soaps and TV series.



We'sve had great success showing dramatic programs that are popular in Africa, such as Games People Play, Sun City, and the hit comedy Taxi Driver, Afforo said.



The African TV Network appeals mainly to a large, diverse audience of African immigrants living in the United States. Many members of the African-American and Caribbean communities also tune into the Network'ss programming.



We found that while networks frequently cover events from Africa, they almost exclusively focus on war and famine. African culture is far more diverse than that. We'sre committed to bringing the quality entertainment, drama, and comedy that African TV programming offers. With us, you get a much more rounded view of what Africa is all about. Afforo pointed out.



The network supports programming and operations through advertising sales. Currently there are spot availabilities in number of programs, including 30 second, 60 second, and sponsorship of programs. Rates are kept reasonable so local Baltimore and Washington DC area businesses can easily afford to reach the Network'ss large and active audiences.
