A new website provides the how-to skills needed to succeed in a communicator'ss ultimate challenge: defending an organization'ss reputation in a crisis.
http://www.CrisisResponseCommunications.com is the online companion to author Bob Roemer'ss book When the Balloon Goes Up: The
Communicator'ss Guide to Crisis Response.
In a crisis a communicator is expected to think strategically and employ the relevant tactics to minimize reputational damage under extreme pressure unlike any other business situation.
That'ss why a detailed plan and preparation are critical, Roemer said.
Together, the site and book include recommended crisis management goals and strategies and practical tips for creating and improving a communications plan, mapping a crisis, measuring the
effectiveness of the response, selecting and training spokespersons, identifying and analyzing audiences, building effective messages and operating a crisis communications command center.
The website also features monthly crisis communications articles which visitors may view on-line and receive by subscribing to the RSS feed.
A former public affairs manager with two decades of experience in the oil and chemical industries Roemer has front-line experience responding to a wide variety of crises including
industrial accidents and explosions with fatalities, petroleum and chemical pipeline spills and leaks, white-collar crime, murders and robberies.
He is now an adjunct lecturer teaching crisis communications in Medill School of Journalism'ss Integrated Marketing Communications graduate program at Northwestern University.
Students need specific skills because they could literally face a crisis on the first day of their first job. Communications practitioners also need this type of information, if for no
other reason, to compare their existing plans with fresh ideas and perspective, said Roemer.
When the Balloon Goes Up: The Communicator'ss Guide to Crisis Response by Bob Roemer (Trafford Publishing, 2007) is available on Amazon.com.
