Brown Takes Over Reins as Chair of AOSSM Medical Publishing Boardof...



The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (http://www.sportsmed.org) (AOSSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Douglas W. Brown, MD as chair of the AOSSM Medical Publishing Board of Trustees. Dr. Brown will take over the position during AOSSM'ss Annual Meeting in Keystone, Colorado (July 9th-12th). He will replace retiring chair, David Sisk, MD.





I am very honored to have this opportunity to help guide AOSSM'ss impressive journals and patient education materials, which, of course, now include not only the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and In Motion, but the new journal, Sports Health. I look forward to the challenges and the possibilities from all of these publications, said Brown.



Dr. Brown graduated from Bowdoin College and the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine in 1972. He did a surgical internship in Rochester, NY, and his orthopaedic surgery residency at UVM. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Sports Medicine Clinic in Atlanta with the late Fred L. Allman, MD in 1976. Prior to moving to Portland, Maine in 1980, he served as a team physician at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis with Jay S. Cox, MD. Dr. Brown has also served as a team physician for the US Olympic Committee, and US Soccer, covering three World Cup events. He was the head team physician for the Women'ss National Team from 1995 to 1999, a period when they won both an Olympic Gold Medal and the World Cup. He has been a member of the U.S. Soccer Medical Committee since 1988.



During my career, I'sve always thought of AOSSM'ss meetings and journal as being the premier places for people to present and publish the best sports medicine research, and the best educational material. Under Dr. Sisk'ss leadership on the Publishing Board, and Dr. Reider'ss leadership as Editor, AJSM has elevated the Society'ss already highly-respected position in the sports medicine world. Now, with the impressive launch of Sports Heath, under Ed Wojtys's leadership, the Society'ss publishing activities are moving to an even broader reach. My goal is to try to continue in Dr. Sisk'ss footsteps. He has been a superb leader. I would like to see us continue improving what we already do well, and to use the tremendous talent and resources we have at AOSSM to strive to be the most respected resource in the world for sports medicine science and education, said Brown.



Dr. Brown has been an active member of AOSSM since 1981, serving as Program Chair in 1990, on the Board of Directors for 13 years, as Society treasurer for four years, and as president in 1999. He has previously served on the Medical Publishing Board of Trustees as treasurer for six years. Dr. Brown recently served as Godfather for the Asia-Pacific Traveling Fellowship in May 2009.
