Students of Scottsdale, AZ Montessori Academy'ss Sr. Elementary, ages 9-12, recently returned from their annual Big Trip. Typically the annual trip is kept close to home but, it was time
they set new standards. This year, the sixth graders decided on Boston, Massachusetts as their destination.
Boston was chosen based on the history it offered the students. Since the fourth through sixth grade each study some aspects of American history, students felt that seeing famous places
such as Harvard University and Paul Revere'ss house would make a significant impact on their studies.
Getting to Boston was not easy. The students developed a business plan which outlined fund-raising opportunities. All students were invited to participate in any of several babysitting
nights, a used book collection and sale,or wrapping paper sales. These are just a few of the activities they planned. Students learned how to separate gross from net earnings in this
process.
Students set a goal of $2100 in earnings. The group activities raised approximately $1700 whereas individuals were able to raise enough money to cover the total estimated costs for
several students.
While in Boston, the students experienced not only American history, but also many life skills. Without parents to aid them--only chaperones, students learned to care for their daily
needs such as preparing for the day hygienically, paying for, and eating meals. They also learned how to manage their budget since they needed to pay for transportation, food, and
souvenirs.
Showing true skills, these students used maps and route information to ride the subways to and from planned activities. Even changing trains became second nature.
Montessori Academy'ss students feel privileged to have had this amazing opportunity. It was a successful trip and they are looking forward to next year'ss trip. It is not currently
planned, but the upcoming sixth grade class has more big ideas.
