Leah Mullen Cover Girl
May 3, 2005 -- So, what's it like to grace the cover of the leading publication for readers and writers of multicultural literature, Shades of Romance (SOR), just months after self-publishing your first book
"It feels magnificent!" exclaims a very excited, Leah Mullen, whose debut novel Again and Again (iUniverse; January 2005; Price: 14.95; 214 pages; Trade Paperback; ISBN: 0-595-33980-8) shares SOR's April cover with Arabesque author, Yolanda Greggs. "The circulation for Shades of Romance is greater than the population of my hometown," Mullen says referring to Coatesville, PA.
"I discovered SOR online (
www.sormag.com) a few years ago and immediately signed up for a subscription," Mullen continued. "The founder and publisher, LaShaunda Hoffman, has created a treasure trove of information and a virtual of who's who in African American fiction publishing. Anyone who is a lover of books or an aspiring writer should sign up."
Again and Again is the story of a mother with a wild past and a daughter who is eager to test her wings and fly. When their personal agendas clash, drama ensues.
"People ask me how I came up with the title," says Mullen. "Again and Again reflects the book's theme, while at the same time it's a sort of personal affirmation for me. During the course of the story the characters find that beyond one dream, there's always another needing to be fulfilled and they have the power to make them a reality. I'm discovering this in my own life."
While Mullen has been published extensively in magazines, newspapers and online publications, this is her first book. "Over eight years separate the day the thought first occurred to me to write a novel and the day I actually received copies of Again and Again in the mail."
"I guess I had a lot of dues to pay first," Mullen admits. "I've taken classes, I participate in writers groups, and I've written many articles and donated them to non-paying markets. I don't regret a thing. This month I was also named as a finalist for the 5th Annual Chistell Writing Contest. So it was all worth the wait."
Leah Mullen is originally from Chester County, PA, the fictional setting for Again and Again. She now resides in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and their two children. Leah's work has appeared in over twenty publications and websites. She has a BA in print journalism from the Pennsylvania State University.
