JR Motorsports I85 Tour 2005
April 17, 2005 -- Interstate 85 will continue to be a heavily traveled thoroughfare for the Southern Division of the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series and Peach State Speedway (PSS) will be the site for Saturday night's running of the Aaron's 250 presented by Lucas Oil Products. The Jefferson, GA track will mark the third stop in a five-race jaunt through I-85 cities.
Maybe this "spring swing" through the buckle of the Bible belt will be just what the JR. Motorsports crew needs to exorcise the demons that have plagued the team all season. It's not as if the #32 WINFUEL Chevrolet is spinning its roof or spitting pea soup out of the exhaust, yet, but mechanical problems have cost the team some good finishes. An alternator failure at Greenville-Pickens Speedway marked the second mechanical failure of the season. At South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) they had so much bad luck, they may as well have been eating peanuts in the pits, (which is bad luck by the way,) and even with these challenges, they almost won the race.
The silver lining is that WINFUEL driver Mark McFarland has been fast everywhere, picking up a pole at SGMP and leading laps in the first two races. Not many would guess that McFarland has had no experience on any of these tracks and PSS is no different.
"It's always fun racing at new places, taking on new challenges," says McFarland. "We've been fortunate to be as fast, off the truck, as we have been. That is just a reflection of my team at JR Motorsports. Our crew chief Jefferson Hodges and the guys give me a great racecar."
Hodges is quick to volley back compliments at McFarland, the 2003 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series national champion.
"Mark is really adept at finding the fastest way around any given track; how to work the gas, how much brake to use. He works on these cars as much as I do so he is able to easily communicate what the car is doing," says Hodges.
As for Saturday night, the team participated in the testing session PSS held on Monday, and they were fast.
"Again, we were good off the truck. That was probably the least we've worked at the track," sounds McFarland. "We were a little loose and got it tightened up a bit when the track got really hot and greasy. That made it tough to see if any changes were working. It reminds me of the Nashville fairgrounds track (Music City Motorplex) and I won the last time I was there. It's rough on tires, but it's fast. I think we're going to turn our season around right here."
On another note, Mark accompanied his car owner, Nextel Cup driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr., to the Martinsville Speedway on Friday for Nextel Cup practice and qualifying. He made sure to stop and see fellow Hooters Pro Cup competitor, Mike Garvey, who qualified for the Nextel Cup event.
"I went by to see how his car was and wish him good luck. I think it's great to see him making these (Nextel) Cup races, I hope to do that one day," says McFarland. "I hope everyone is behind him, we should be."
