Vocada Awarded Patent for Merging Voice Messaging Data First Used in Failsafe Medical Communications System

Printer Friendly Graphic March 14, 2005 -- Vocada, Inc. has been awarded a U.S. patent on a broad-based technology and methodology that for the first time bridges voice messaging and data systems in a way that allows for categorization, archiving, retrieval, and interaction of voice messages with today's leading-edge Internet-based data platforms.

Vocada's patented technology is covered under US Patent 6,778,644, and specifically protects Vocada's unique ability to create categorized voice messages, and enable those messages to interact with data-oriented systems such as an electronic medical records system or a customer relationship management application. The technology is especially suited for businesses or institutions, such as hospitals, that have a need for critical communications management.

Vocada's technology achieves a breakthrough in the simplification, management, and integration of voice content into the realm of enterprise knowledge. Until now, voice content resided on the traditional telephony network, and was not integrated into the core data/knowledge systems maintained by information technology departments.

Vocada's technology bridges these two worlds by making voice content manageable and intelligent for the first time. This helps organizations communicate faster, track and follow-up on important communications better, and monitor critical communication flows. This was not possible until now.

The first commercial application of the technology, Vocada's VoiceLink medical communications system, leverages the core intellectual property that is covered in the patent. Vocada's VoiceLink eliminates the communications delays, errors, and breakdowns that plague hospitals and large clinics. A number of leading U.S. hospitals are currently utilizing the VoiceLink system to enhance patient safety and improve physician productivity.

The VoiceLink system enables a reporting clinician, such as a radiologist or pathologist, to send a verbal report of a critical patient finding to an ordering clinician. As soon as the verbal report is created, the ordering clinician receives an alert and can retrieve the report by phone.

The system continues to send alerts until the report is retrieved and notes in the database when a report is received. The reporting clinician can monitor the process and status of his or her reports via the Web. The entire process, including the original voice recording, is archived and remains searchable for 10 or more years.

"Our technology ties the voice message into a data system, where both now reside. This makes all communications, not just e-mail, searchable and integrated with other useful information," said Peter White, CEO of Vocada and co-inventor of Vocada's technology. "The system eliminates the potential for missed communications, and importantly, has an audit function that ensures critical communications are received by the right person at the right time."

Vocada offers VoiceLink as a hosted, on-demand solution and requires no customer investment in hardware or software. It can be accessed from any telephone and/or Internet-connected web browser. The hospital or clinic pays a monthly service fee for VoiceLink, which enables its physicians to use the system.
