Mayor Dannel P. Malloy accepted the challenge by braving the needle on June 18 at the Stamford Government Center located at 888 Washington Blvd. City of Stamford government employees also participated at that time. The Blood Drive Challenge will continue throughout the summer.
Current participants include: George Comfort & Sons; Ashforth; RFR Realty, LLC; Reckson, a Division of SL Green Realty Corp.; W&M Properties; Antares Real Estate; and Stamford Board of REALTORS. Participants in the Challenge can register at www.givelife.org to donate blood.
"The City of Stamford and its employees are proud to join in this community wide effort," said Dannel P. Malloy, Mayor of Stamford. "It is gratifying to know that we have such thoughtful and caring corporate citizens in our City."
Nearly 5 million people receive blood transfusions every year. Connecticut residents alone use 650 pints of blood every day with a demand that peaks during the summer months. Despite all medical advances, healthy volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood. With just one donation, up to three lives can be saved. Connecticut has 31 transfusing hospitals, where each donated unit of blood can be separated to serve different individuals. The Challenge aims to help serve the basic needs of Connecticut hospital patients.
"With a continuing need for blood donations, we realized the importance of making the Challenge an annual event," said Jodi Gutierrez, VP of Property Management for George Comfort & Sons and the On-Site Property Manager at High Ridge Park Corporate Center. "We were extremely pleased with the success of the Challenge last year and hope to top the results this year."
Last year, the Challenge collected 245 productive pints of blood for the American Red Cross and may have helped as many as 735 Connecticut hospital patients.
"We are extremely grateful to High Ridge Park Corporate Center for continuing to spearhead this Challenge," said Joan Bennett, District Manager/Donor Services, American Red Cross. "We expect to raise much needed blood for Connecticut again this year as a result of this initiative."
Blood transfusions are used for trauma victims - due to accidents and burns - heart surgery, organ transplants, women with childbirth complications, newborns and premature babies, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer, or other diseases, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia.
The winner of the event will be presented with a plaque at a date and place to be determined.
High Ridge Park is currently seeking additional property managers and landlords to participate in the Challenge. For further information, please contact Jodi Gutierrez at (203) 322-0325 or via e-mail jgutierrez @ att.net. George Comfort & Sons is located at 5 High Ridge Park, Stamford, CT.
