PNC, the nation's leader in certified green buildings, also has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to participate in the Net-Zero Energy Commercial Building Initiative to create energy-saving technologies.
With the certification of these Green Branch locations, listed below, PNC now has 55 certified green buildings, which is more than any other company on Earth. PNC's Green Branch features include:
- Recycling: more than 50 percent of the branch is locally manufactured or made from recycled or green materials.
- Energy & Water Efficiency: energy usage is reduced 34 percent or more compared to a traditional branch; Water usage is reduced by 4,000 gallons a year.
- Pollution Control: construction waste is recycled or salvaged and the cooling system is designed to protect the ozone.
The newly certified Green Branch locations are in five states, including the first for Maryland, as follows:
- Kentucky - Hamburg
- Maryland - two in Bowie
- New Jersey -Turnersville and Forked River
- Pennsylvania - City Line and East Norriton (Philadelphia area), Hanover, Mechanicsburg, and Oakmont
- Virginia - Annandale and Manassas
PNC is also among participants in the DOE's Net-Zero Energy Commercial Building Initiative. The goal is to further develop energy-saving technologies to achieve savings of 50 percent or more for new construction and 30 percent for retrofitted construction in commercial buildings.
"By leveraging our resources with partners in the commercial sector, we can accelerate the adoption of clean, energy efficient technologies that will help our nation achieve the President's goal of reducing carbon emissions and improving energy security," said John Mizroch, DOE's acting assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
Gary Saulson, PNC's director of Corporate Real Estate, said the bank will use a newly constructed Green Branch in 2009 to enhance its current energy-efficient design, which is driven by high-efficiency systems, insulation and maximum use of natural light.
"We recognize the importance of energy-efficiency today, and welcome the opportunity to improve upon our decade of green building experience and collaborate with the DOE on innovative approaches that can be replicated nationwide by other commercial builders, " Saulson said.
