May 13, 2005 -- The National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) announced today that Coloradoan Steve Schuck has been recognized as one of our nation's civic, political and cultural
leaders. In making the award, NECO's founder describes recipients of its prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor as "the finest representatives of their heritage."
On May 14, Schuck will receive the award at Ellis Island, adding his name to the long list of former awardees that includes U.S. Presidents, Nobel Prize winners, leaders of industry, and
gifted artists, performers, and athletes. Fellow alumni include Presidents George Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton; national leaders Henry Kissinger, General Norman
Schwarzkopf, Secretary of State Colin Powell and Mayor Giuliani; and civic leaders Muhammed Ali and Rosa Parks.
Schuck receives the award as a grandson of immigrants who came to America to make a better life for their children and their children's children.
"I am in awe of the courage of my grandparents," notes Schuck. "Through their sacrifices the American dream became a reality for all subsequent generations. America is the greatest idea
ever conceived by mankind."
The award celebrates those who have made a significant contribution to their community and country.
Recognized as an industry and community leader, Schuck founded The Schuck Corporation, a real estate development company in Denver and Colorado Springs in 1969. It is now run by his son
Bill. In 1986, he was a candidate for governor of the State of Colorado.
Schuck has worked unceasingly to make high quality education accessible to all families, particularly those in disadvantaged circumstances. He has been on the forefront of the battle in
Colorado and throughout the country for educational reform, school choice, and parental empowerment. In 2001, Schuck and his wife Joyce created Parents Challenge. The program provides
tuition and tutoring assistance to 250 low-income and primarily minority children attending public and private schools and provides education and life skills training for their
parents.
Established in 1986 by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO), the Ellis Island Medals of Honor pay tribute to the ancestry groups that comprise America's unique cultural
mosaic. With a mandate to preserve ethnic diversity and to combat injustice, hatred, and bigotry NECO is the largest organization of its kind in the U.S.
Other 2005 awardees include Director and Producer Penny Marshall; Seeds of Peace President Aaron David Miller; U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao; NASA Scientist Dr. Firouz Michael
Naderi; Football Legend, Business Leader, and Broadcaster Nick Buoniconti; and Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, Chairman of the American Red Cross.
In 20 years, only 1,000 American citizens have received this award.
Schuck will be honored on Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the annual ceremony at Ellis Island. A gala reception will follow in Ellis Island's Great Hall. Capping off the evening's events will
be a spectacular fireworks display in New York Harbor.
